Nonuments DC (2018 - Ongoing)

Washington, DC is home to a plethora of the nation’s monuments. From tip to tip of the National Mall to Lincoln’s inner sanctum, the city’s landscape is dotted with markers of our country’s complex history. I was once told, “History is written by the victors.” This project counters that old adage, questioning who and what gets memorialized and historicized through public monuments. By seeking out monuments on a micro level, Nonuments DC aims to counter dominant historical narratives, relying upon and celebrating DC’s richly diverse community and local history. Culling from various corners of the city and hidden gems, I intend to expand this project from mere illustrations into custom-made merchandise (prints, buttons, mugs, totes, and tees).
